Ferry Services between Monhegan Island & New Harbor
Travel 10 miles into the Gulf of Maine to visit the tranquility of Monhegan Island. Slow down your pace and enjoy the natural beauty this island has to offer. Monhegan is renowned for attracting interests of all types from birders to hikers and artists from around the world! The small island is year-round home to only a few dozen residents. There are no paved roads and no cars, but the walking trails will take you to views atop the highest cliffs in Maine. Whether you are visiting for the day, overnight, or an extended period you must use a boat to get there! When you begin your Monhegan ferry journey on the Hardy III, our friendly crew and the scenery of Muscongus Bay won’t disappoint! Be sure to be on the lookout for some wildlife along they way!
Our Monhegan ferry will depart from the working waterfront of New Harbor where you may see lobstermen unloading their catch. As we pass by the region’s islands, you might see bald eagles or harbor porpoises foraging. Upon our return trip we may pass by some rocks where we spend a few minutes watching for seals sunbathing or splashing in the water.
Our passenger only cruises depart New Harbor and Monhegan Island twice daily in the peak season. This allows for “daytrippers” to spend about 5 hours exploring the island. Take a look at our Monhegan Island ferry schedule below to find the right to plan your trip to this beautiful place!
All travelers must purchase TWO one-way tickets to complete your round trip: Once you add your first one-way ferry to Monhegan Island trip with the correct time and date to your cart, select “Keep Shopping” in the top right corner to add your return trip time and date to the cart! If you wish to book another cruise type like our Puffin Cruise you may also add that at the same time! Then you may proceed to checkout. Daytrippers must book the 9:00am New Harbor to Monhegan AND 3:15pm Monhegan to New Harbor ferries.

Limit: Each passenger is allowed 2 items under 50lbs plus 1 personal item such as a purse or backpack. Additional items are $5 one way. If you require, we recommend purchasing additional items when you purchase your tickets to save time at check in. Additional items can also be added at check in.
Packing: Pack as if you are going to the airport. Please consolidate your belongings into as few pieces of luggage as possible without exceeding 50lbs. If you can not lift your own luggage into your car, it is too heavy. We recommend using plastic totes, sturdy suitcases, well constructed boxes and/or coolers. Securing lids and covers with duct tape works well and is weatherproof. As you pack, please keep in mind that all baggage handling from your car, to the boat, to the island dock, to the island trucks and finally to your accommodation – and back – is done by hand! Please respect our crew who moves your luggage on and off the vessel as many as 4 times!
Prohibited Items: HBC reserves the right to refuse to transport items. Items that are not permitted onboard include but are not limited to:
- open bags or boxes
- paper/plastic/reusable shopping bags that can easily tear or loose items
- bungee cords
- wheeled carts or wagons (wheeled suitcases are accepted)
- fishing hooks attached to fishing rods
- bicycles
- gasoline or propane
- kayaks
- vehicles
- please do not bring your own water; it is heavy to transport and is easily purchased on the island.
Bag Tags: Every item (including carry on items like backpacks) requires a new tag which will be provided upon arrival. Each tag will need to be clearly marked as directed. If staying overnight, tags must indicate your accommodations. Tags facilitate efficient handling on the island and prevent lost items. HBC cruises is not responsible for items with tags from other ferries or airline services that may cause items to be lost or misplaced – please remove all old tags. HBC is not responsible for damaged, broken, or lost items.

Cellular Service: The dock in New Harbor tends to be a black out spot for most cell phone providers. So please do not expect to be able to make calls or text when you are at the dock. Most people are able to get limited cell service in the parking lot and on the boat for a period of time after it leaves the harbor. Cell service on Monhegan can also be spotty and unreliable. Your cell phone service availability will be subject to your particular carrier. There is no publicly available Wi-Fi at the dock in New Harbor, Monhegan, or on the Hardy III.
Day Trippers: There are no public trash cans on the island. Day trippers are required to take their trash back to the mainland. Pack in/Pack out.
Pets: A dog ticket must be purchased for each pet. All pets must be leashed or kenneled while aboard. Monhegan Island has limited ability to accommodate visiting dogs. If you bring your dog, you must be prepared to collect and remove all pet waste. Please respect the residents’ private properties. Dogs must remain on a leash at all times.
Restrooms: Modern restrooms are available aboard the boat. We recommend you use these restrooms before arriving to Monhegan and New Harbor. Public restrooms are available on the island for a fee and are located behind the Monhegan House in the village. Please note that these are maintained by a private business and may not be open in the shoulder season.
Saturday Ferries: All boats are extremely busy on Saturdays with passengers and luggage. Please arrive early and have all luggage clearly marked.
